The FASD Legal Issues Resource Center invites you to participate in the third biennial conference/workshop, “FASD Through the Criminal Justice System”.

The conference will focus how the criminal justice system can best respond to persons with FASD who find themselves as witnesses or as defendants in criminal cases.

The conference will feature a series of round-table discussions involving criminal justice professionals (judges, lawyers, police, probation and corrections officers) from international and national jurisdictions. The round-table discussions will explore, for each stage of the criminal process, the challenges of working with persons with, or suspected of suffering from, FASD. Parents of persons with FASD will also contribute their perspectives to these discussions.

The conference seeks to develop practical solutions, arising from the critical analysis and engagement of conference participants. These will be informed by and reflective of the complex legal and ethical issues identified and examined in the “Legal Issues of FASD Consensus Statement” (2013). The development of this statement was led by The Honourable Ian Binnie, CC, QC, Former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (see:http://www.ihe.ca/research-programs/knowledge-transfer-dissemination/consensus-development-conference-series/fasd-legal/about-the-legal-issues-of-fetal-alcohol-spectrum-disorder-co).

(Please Note: This one day conference is a preconference event held under the auspices of the 7th International Conference on FASD, organized by the University of British Columbia, inter-professional continuing education. The 7th International Conference on FASD will take place at the Westin Bayshore, Vancouver,  B.C., on March 1-4, 2017)
