Family Law Issues for lawyers who do not practice Family Law
January 25 Mary Mouat, QC will be chairing a 2 CPD session “Family Law 101 - everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask”.
This offering is for lawyers whose practices sometimes touch on family law but who do not practice in that area. It’s a "what to look for – what to be alive to” course.
The following three areas will be canvassed:
- Family Law: then and now – a review of the Family Law Act (including a review of new provisions, definitions and limitation dates);
- Family Law does have rules – Supreme Court Family Law Rules, Provincial Court (Family) Rules and Provincial Court (CFCSA) Rules (including discussion of mediation and mediation/arbitration in family law); and
- Family Law and how to dodge the bullets – client management and defensive practice.
By looking at the legislation, rules and client management, attendees will come away with enough information to at least know what not to do and where to look for information.

This course offers 2 hours of Professional Development Credits.

This year’s credits can be obtained as follows:
- Login through the lawyer login on the homepage: www.lawsociety.bc.ca
- Click “Continuing Professional Development (CPD)” under the “Education” heading (skip notifications to get to this page).
- Click on the “Record Courses, Group Studies & Mentoring” tab
- Type the group study name of “Inns of Court – Victoria” into the “Course/Group Study” name box (leave dates out as this is set up with a date range).
- You can also enter “Inns of Court – Victoria” into the provider box although not necessary.
- Click “Search”, scroll down to view the results.
- Click on the correct record for 2017 when it appears.
- Enter the hours and date of attendance.
- Click “get credit”.
