New Judicial Appointment to Court of Appeal for BC

The Honourable Janet Winteringham, a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, is appointed a Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia. Justice Winteringham replaces Justice G.M. Dickson, who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective December 1, 2022.

Court exempts legal advisers from reporting clients’ tax affairs until Charter challenge determined

Legal advisers across Canada, including Quebec notaries and Ontario paralegals, do not have to comply with constitutionally-impugned Income Tax Act (ITA) mandatory reporting obligations with respect to clients’ tax avoidance, following the Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s (FLSC) success in obtaining a nationwide interlocutory court injunction until its Charter challenge to last June’s ITA amendments is determined.

NP 33: Northern Virtual Bail Court (Prince George) Forensic Liaison Pilot Project

The purpose of this Notice is to describe the process for referral of an adult accused person appearing in custody from the Prince George courthouse sheriff cells or a remand centre into the Northern Virtual Bail Courtroom VR1 to a Forensic Liaison and, if requested by the Forensic Liaison, a Forensic Psychiatrist.

Statement from CBABC President Scott Morishita on racist attack

We are appalled to hear that Allard Law students and Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, were recently subject to a racist attack during a hybrid Zoom presentation. Racism in the profession and our community is intolerable and we condemn it.
