Law Week 2012 - Access to Justice: Celebration of the Charter of Rights - Vancouver

  • April 13, 2012

VANCOUVER, BC –The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, is pleased to announce Law Week 2012; a week of celebrations including an Open House, Fun Run, and a public speaking contest. Law Week is a national celebration of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and an opportunity to learn more about the justice system; what the legal community does; and what legal resources are available.

Law Week 2012 includes events across Canada from April 15-22.

This year’s theme, Celebration of the Charter of Rights, highlights the 30th anniversary of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights. The Charter has brought changes to laws that discriminate against people because of personal characteristics or prejudices. With the Charter, Canadian society has a clearer recognition of human rights and freedoms, and ways to enforce these rights.

Activities in Vancouver include:

  • Public Open House at the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) featuring a taped Interview with the three Chief Justices with the CBC’s Ian Hanomansing and interactive judicial games such as, “Are You Smarter than a Lawyer?” held outside on the lawns of the VAG from 10am-2pm (April 17)
  • Barry Sullivan Law Cup  - a public speaking contest for high school students  (April 19)
  • A Fun Run for lawyers and their families – a fundraiser for Access Pro Bono (April 22)

On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch will hold its province-wide “Dial-A-Lawyer Day” from 10am – 2pm. Residents in British Columbia are invited to call toll-free at 1.800.663.1919 to speak with a lawyer for up to 15 minutes at no cost in five different areas of law (Employment/Labour, Immigration, Family Law, Torts, and Wills/Estates/Trusts).

More information is available online at www.bclawweek.org. Law Week 2012 partners are the Law Society of British Columbia, the Law Foundation of British Columbia, the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC, Vancouver Bar Association, and Local County and Bar Associations.
