VICTORIA, BC – The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, is pleased to announce Law Week 2012; a week of celebrations including a mock trial, public open house and Dial a Lawyer Day. Law Week is a national celebration of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and an opportunity to learn more about the justice system; what the legal community does; and what legal resources are available.
This year’s theme, Celebration of the Charter of Rights, highlights the 30th anniversary of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights. The Charter has brought changes to laws that discriminate against people because of personal characteristics or prejudices. With the Charter, Canadian society has a clearer recognition of human rights and freedoms, and ways to enforce these rights.
Law Week 2012 includes events across Canada from April 15-22.
Victoria will be celebrating Law Day on Saturday, April 21, at the Victoria Courthouse from 10am-3pm. Find out more and discuss the Celebration of the Charter of Rights with a panel of top legal professionals during a Q & A session at the Law Day Open House.
Activities in Victoria include:
Mock “Fairy Tale” Trial
Police K-9 dog unit demonstrations
Community Forum: Q & A with Judges
Resource Tables and Information
Passport to Justice Treasure Hunt
A tour of a Sheriff’s van and cells
On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch will hold its province-wide “Dial-A-Lawyer Day” from 10am – 2pm.
