As a result of the declaration of the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the Supreme Court will be closed on Monday, September 19, 2022. The purpose of this Notice is to outline the process for rescheduling matters set for September 19, 2022, in all Supreme Court locations.

Criminal Matters

All criminal and extradition proceedings scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2022, will be rescheduled as follows:

  • Multi-day proceedings scheduled to commence or continue on Monday, September 19, will commence or continue on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. The scheduling of additional dates canbe addressed with the presiding judge, in consultation with Supreme Court Scheduling.
  • Matters set for fix-date appearances on September 19, 2022, in any court location, will be reset to Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the same time and in the same court location as theappearances were initially scheduled (i.e. 10:00 am or 2:00 pm).
  • Pre-trial conferences or case management conferences scheduled for Monday, September 19,2022, in any court location, will be reset to Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the same time andin the same court location as the conferences were initially scheduled. If there is an assigned judge, and the judge is not available on September 20, Supreme Court Scheduling will contactthe parties to reschedule the conference.
  • All other matters scheduled for one day or less on September 19, in any court location, willproceed as follows:
    • In Vancouver and New Westminster, the matter will be reset to Tuesday, September 20,2022, at the same time. If counsel or a self represented accused person is unavailable onSeptember 20, they may call the case ahead by contacting Supreme Court Scheduling toschedule a new date.
    • In all other court locations, which are on the assize system, the matter will be heard onanother day during the week of September 20-23, 2022.

Civil and Family Trials, Long Chambers and Conferences

All civil and family trials, long chambers, trial management conferences, case planning conferences,
judicial case conferences, judicial management conferences and settlement conferences scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2022, are automatically rescheduled to Tuesday, September 20, 2022. Parties wishing to adjourn a proceeding or appearance rescheduled to Tuesday, September 20, 2022 may contact Supreme Court Scheduling to arrange a new date.

Civil or Family Regular (Short) Chambers Applications

All civil and family regular chambers hearings scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2022 are automatically rescheduled to Tuesday, September 20, 2022. If parties have any questions about the scheduling of regular chambers, they should contact the Supreme Court registry.
