Public Safety and Community Fairness

We have opportunities today to implement changes large and small to the administration of justice in British Columbia. The first two issues described below – the practice of restorative justice and the experience of indigenous citizens – represent opportunities to bring about changes that can have a positive impact on groups of individuals while relieving the burden on the justice system, which is created in part by a reliance on traditional means of administering justice. Success in implementing meaningful change in these areas requires the active support of senior members of the judiciary and of government. Attention to all of these issues, including the implementation of the changes recommended, will have a meaningful and lasting impact on specific regions, populations and individuals in British Columbia that are currently underserved by the justice system.
