The BC government has established a working group, including the Ministry of Attorney General, the Ministry of Health and the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC, to review the adult abuse and neglect framework contained within the Adult Guardianship Act.
Part 3 of the Act sets out the province’s adult abuse and neglect framework, which provides for the reporting and investigation of abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults, as well as the appropriate response. Vulnerable adults include those who are mentally or physically incapable of seeking support and assistance on their own.
The Act gives designated agencies the responsibility and certain powers to investigate concerns of abuse and neglect, and to provide support and assistance to adults who are abused or neglected. These agencies include:
- BC’s five regional health authorities
- Community Living BC, for adults eligible to receive community living supports
- The Providence Health Care Society, for persons within their facilities
