WILLS, ESTATES AND SUCCESSION AMENDMENT ACT, 2020 (BILL 21)

The Legislative Assembly of BC resumed its Spring Session after adjourning in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic emergency (COVID-19). The provincial emergency due to COVID-19 was first declared by the BC government by Ministerial Order 073/2020 on March 18, 2020 and since renewed to date. The Legislature is scheduled to sit from June 22 to August 14, 2020. The Wills, Estates and Succession Amendment Act, 2020 (Bill 21) has passed First Reading.

BC SHORTHAND REPORTERS ASSOCIATION: ALLEGING UNQUALIFIED PERSONS ACTING AS COURT REPORTERS

The BCSRA contacted the BC Attorney General to allege that there are unqualified persons acting as court reports in violation of the Court Rules Act, Official Reporters Regulaton (B.C. Reg 222/84), Supreme Court Civil Rule 7-2(12) and Supreme Court Family Rule 9-2 (11). Specifically, the BCSRA submits that some BC firms are using apparently unauthorized and unqualified personnel to perform Examinations for Discovery and also for production of official court transcripts in BC.

REQUEST FOR COMMENT: Money Judgement Enforcement Act, 2020

The Ministry of Attorney General has proposed a new Uniform Civil Enforcement Money Judgments Act. The government is looking for feedback and submissions through its consultation paper which is attached here. The summary of questions are provided at the end of the paper. The deadline for the Banking Law Section to make a sumbission has been extended.
