Submission to LSBC regarding Inclusive Language Guidelines

  • August 14, 2023

On August 14, CBABC delivered a submission proposing a series of additions to the “Guidance for Lawyers on Using Inclusive Language”. Published by the Law Society in March 2023, this resource aims to support legal professionals in their use of inclusive language.

While we welcome the creation of this practice resource to help improve equity, diversity and inclusion in the profession, our letter offers additional recommendations for consideration following consultation with our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

The Committee’s mandate is to advise and assist with strategies to recognize, reflect and promote equity and diversity in the profession; promote and encourage the inclusion of equity-seeking groups in the profession; and to address attitudinal, systemic and structural barriers.

Our recommendations include further preferred referencing and terminology regarding race, gender, disability, and other characteristics, as well as other general comments and feedback.

As the Law Society builds future polices and resources in the field of reconciliation, equity, diversity and inclusion, CBABC welcomes the opportunity to contribute.
