Submission to BC Premier: Implementing UNCRC in BC

  • August 01, 2023

On July 31 2023, CBABC delivered a submission to the B.C. Premier encouraging the provincial government to develop a plan to implement its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) by World Children’s Day in November. We also encouraged the government to amend the Family Law Act and Child, Family and Community Service Act to better represent children’s interests during legal proceedings across B.C.

In March 2023, the CBA delivered a submission to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several of his ministers urging them to honour Canada’s commitment to children. This followed the release of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s Concluding Observations on Canada’s 5th and 6th Reports which critiqued Canada’s progress in implementing the UNCRC and made a series of recommendations for federal, provincial and territorial governments to consider.

It is the CBABC view that the BC government is obligated to show leadership in the areas in which it can effect change, and to work in partnership with the federal government and other provinces.
