Submission to Judicial Compensation Commission: Judicial Compensation

  • January 23, 2023

CBABC delivered a submission on January 23, 2023, to the 2022 BC Judicial Compensation Commission, regarding the issue of reasonable compensation for Provincial Court judges and judicial justices.

The Judicial Compensation Act establishes an independently appointed Judicial Compensation Commission which makes recommendations on the remuneration, allowances and benefits of Provincial Court judges and judicial justices. The JCC convenes once every four years and CBABC provides a submission.

CBABC recommends a significant increase in BC Provincial Court judges’ and judicial justices’ base salaries to better reflect the increased demands they face and align more closely with salaries of their counterparts across Canada and in private practice.

The judiciary has faced tremendous challenges. The Provincial Court has undergone dramatic change, and the job of judges and judicial justices has increased. At present, judges and judicial justices are among the lowest paid across Canada. CBABC says this must change to attract strong applicants to the bench.
