Since his appointment as BC’s Information and Privacy Commissioner in 2018, Commissioner Michael McEvoy has led a series of investigations aimed at strengthening access to information and protection of privacy, ranging from a ground-breaking report on how BC’s political parties collect and use the personal information of BC voters to an examination of the massive health data breach by LifeLabs. Commissioner McEvoy is recognized as a national and international leader in the privacy authority community, chairing the governing committee of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities.

Privacy & Data Security Lawyer

Claire is an experienced privacy and data security lawyer at Deloitte Legal Canada LLP. Beyond her commercial practice, Claire regularly represents targets of non-consensual distribution of intimate images (also known as “NCDII” or “revenge porn”) and is involved in a number of NCDII initiatives across Canada. She is an expert advisor on the creation of British Columbia’s Civil Resolutions Tribunal, Canada’s first online tribunal tasked with expediting the process by which targets of NCDII may seek civil recourse, and the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund’s Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence Commission.

She shares her insights during the session covering British Columbia’s new Intimate Images Protection Act.

Kyle made the move to Surrey Police Service after over 22 years as a Legal Advisor to the RCMP. Since 1998, Kyle has provided legal advice on all operational and administrative policing matters. He was Legal Counsel to the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit for the 2010 Winter Olympics. During the conference, he sheds light on public order policing in national infrastructure developments, including natural resources projects, pipelines and blockades.

John Tuck is a highly experienced lawyer, having represented the Ministry of Attorney, Legal Services Branch for 27 years. He is an Adjunct Professor with the University of Victoria where he teaches information and privacy law.

At Microsoft Canada, John shares the organization’s strategic policy and technology efforts with the government, education and healthcare communities. John has been the Senior Director of Architecture, Standards and Engineering at the Chief Information Officer Branch of the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and has worked for the Department of National Defense. John has a Master’s degree in Computer and Communications Security from the Royal Military College of Canada.
