Meeting Title/Topic: Private Company Tax Proposals: The Changing Landscape
Synopsis: On July 18th, 2017, the Liberal Government released a consultation paper, “Tax Planning Using Private Corporations” outlining proposed changes to income sprinkling, the availability of the lifetime capital gains exemption and converting income to capital gains effective January 1, 2018. Input was requested on how passive income earned by a corporation should be taxed. Areet Kaila, Cathie Brayley and Richard Weiland took members through proposals and show how they would affect in a significant way the taxes payable and the compliance costs facing private companies and their shareholders.

Synopsis: Ron Segev of Segev LLP discussed the commercial elements of blockchain technology and transactions, including how smart contracts and tokens/coins can be used to create more efficient transactions and markets.
Zach Masum, head of the BC Securities Commission’s Tech Team,discussed some of the securities law implications of blockchain, including those discussed in CSA Staff Notice 46-307 Cryptocurrency Offerings, such as coin and token offerings, cryptocurrency exchanges and cryptocurrency investment funds.
