Bill Passed: Bill 13, Pay Transparency Act

  • May 11, 2023

On May 11, 2023, the provincial government passed Bill 13, the Pay Transparency Act, which aims to address and eliminate pay inequity amongst employees.

Starting November 1, 2023, this legislation will:

  • Prohibit employers from asking job applicants to disclose their pay history;
  • Require employers to list expected pay or pay range in job postings;
  • Prohibit certain reprisals by employers against employees; and
  • Require specified employers to complete and post pay transparency reports.

This will apply to private employers with 1,000 employees for 2024 and employers of smaller groups in subsequent years.

The CBA advocated for pay transparency legislation in the 2021 CBA report, Pay Equity in the Legal Profession.
