Report

On October 25th and 26th, 2014 I attended the Young Lawyers CBA 2014 Directorate Meeting on behalf of the BC-Lower Mainland Section.

A highlight of the Directorate Meeting was having the opportunity to interact with the Branch Representatives from each province and territory, and to hear about the initiatives and events being put on in each jurisdiction. It was great to learn how each section operates differently depending on their particular needs, for example, whether the province has a mandatory CPD credits, or whether there is a large number of remote lawyers.

The meeting agenda and a summary of each topic is as follows:

  1. Discussion of roles, responsibilities, and reports from YL National executive members
  2. Legal Future Initiative: Discussion on the CBA's recommended action report regarding proposed changes to the Canadian legal profession tha<ot will keep the it relevant and current.
  3. The Program Exchange: Branch Representatives provided a report on activities in their jurisdictions.
  4. National Magazine Roundtable: Focus groups on how the National magazine and website can meet the needs of Young Lawyers with relevant material in a format that works for readers.
  5. Strategic Plan Update: Report of Young Lawyers - CBA current initiatives.
  6. Re-Think Presentation: Presentation from CCCA representative Cathy Cummings. Strategic analysis of how the CBA can fulfill its members' needs, increase membership, and grow into the future.
  7. YL-CBA Initiatives: Topics included: CBA Legal Conference Calgary 2015, Nominations for YL-Pro-Bono Award, Work/Life Balance Resource Centre website, Partnership Toolkit content on CBA website, increased YL-CBA International presence.
