Bill Introduced: Property Law Amendment Act, 2022

  • March 31, 2022

Bill 12-2022 was introduced to amend the Property Law Act so that a purchaser may rescind a contract of purchase and sale by serving written notice to the seller within a prescribed number of days. Details will be determined in the regulations. The BC government says these amendments will protect homebuyers.

Historic action plan guides UNDRIP implementation in B.C.

The Province is releasing the Declaration Act Action Plan, developed in consultation and co-operation with Indigenous Peoples, outlining 89 specific actions every ministry in government will take to create a better province for Indigenous Peoples in B.C.

CBABC is partnering with Electronic Recycling Association to collect and refurbish previously used laptops, computers and smartphones and distribute them to remote and Indigenous communities throughout British Columbia. These electronics will help residents access court services, lawyers and the justice system.

"Budget 2022 is committing $8.19 million in new, ongoing annual funding for legal aid services in the province, helping people get the timely legal services they need."

The Association of Legal Aid Lawyers announce funding details

  • March 22, 2022

A.L.L. have secured ongoing funding totaling $3.511M for Legal Aid BC as well as Society for Children and Youth, which will support legal aid policy changes and enhancements. Additionally, a 2.072M one-time technology grant has been provided to LABC, to help legal aid lawyers in adapting to virtual processes resultant from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Letter to Land Title and Survey Authority of BC: Land Owner Transparency Registry

CBABC has asked the Land Owner Transparency administrator to consider a series of recommendations designed to improve the process and requirements for land owners to file notice of beneficial ownership in BC. These recommendations are in response to privacy concerns and technical issues identified by CBABC members.

Bill Introduced: Bill 11-2022 Commercial Liens Act

  • March 11, 2022

B.C. is planning to adopt the model Uniform Liens Act prepared by the Uniform Law Conference of Canada, which was recommended by BCLI in 2003. This new model will create a new statutory commercial lien that may be registered in the registry established under the Personal Property Security Act.

Face Masks Still Required in British Columbia Courthouses

All people attending courthouses in British Columbia are still required to wear a face mask, including in entrances, lobbies, waiting areas, registries, hallways, stairways, restrooms and elevators on March 11, 2022 and until further notice.
